We had four- yes, four- colleges in house for the last two weeks, all participating in our Civil Rights and Social Justice Program. We welcomed a group from Gadsden State and Jeff State CC from Alabama, Forsyth Tech from North Carolina, and Metropolitan CC from Omaha Nebraska. And it was a really great two weeks, with sunshine, lots of great lectures, conversations and field trips, and many new friends made for the future.
Our program began with an overview of ancient Irish history, and we proceeded forward to the changes brought by the colonization of Ireland and the Ulster Plantation. We covered topics on famine and poverty, migrants and emigration policies, culture and news, women’s rights & freedom of speech. Our field trips included Doagh Famine Village, Ballyshannon Workhouse, Donegal Castle, The Museum of Free Derry, The Bogside Murals, and Epic Diaspora Museum.
Our service projects were a lot of fun, and a real bonus for two projects here in Donegal- the Bundoran Community Garden, and the Bundoran Community Playground. Many thanks to all our students for supporting our local projects.
